Physiotherapy for Jaw Pain

 WHAT IS TMD? 

 Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD) are a collection of problems related to the jaw joint (TMJ), the articular disc, and related muscles.  

TMD affects 10% of the population Symptoms can include pain in the jaw, face, ear, neck, and headache.  

Approximately 70% of people with TMD also have neck problems. 

 

WHAT CAUSES TMD? 

TMD can be related to trauma (such as a car accident, a fall onto the chin, or a blow to the jaw), overuse (such as clenching or grinding of the teeth, and stress), and joint arthritis. 

 

PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR TMD 

Assessment includes a thorough history, and observation of posture, movement patterns, joint mobility, and muscle function.  

Treatment often includes education, hands-on manual therapy, postural correction, needling/acupuncture, and specific exercises for the neck and jaw.
